Using SARTopo in Search Operations

What is the class about?

SARTopo is a widely-used, collaborative online and offline mapping tool for use in Search and Rescue. Topics covered will from range from the ability to print maps for planning a training or at a mission, to assisting in base as a technician (example processing GPS tracks or recording clues), to using SARTopo for SAR planning and operations tasks, either on-scene or for remote support. Hands-on exercise will develop mapping data to support a mock search and rescue mission from inception into the second-operational period.

Lost Person Behavior

What is the class about?

Understanding of lost person behavior is an important element for the planning of search and rescue missions. This course will present the most recent advances in lost person behavior with Robert Koester’s latest research, and new behavior categories crucial to solving the mystery of where to look for a lost person.

  • Study planning and operational considerations for managing search resources

  • Learn about dozens of missing person category specifics

  • Use actual search mission table-top exercises to apply learning points

Classroom sessions will incorporate table-top exercises with lecture topics. The exercises are designed to allow students to practice and develop efficient deployment strategies for search resources. Participants will go into details of actual search missions and the profiles of different subject groups, in addition to hands-on experience with creating reflex tasks and focused investigation questions. From abductions to lost workers, subjects with dementia, aircraft and more, a selection from a total of 41 different subject categories will be presented.

What do I need to bring?

Each student will need a copy of Koester’s Lost Person Behavior book (preferred) or the LPB app (alternative). The book can be purchased on Amazon ($32). The app can be found on Apple and Android app stores (~$10).
